Review of Family Practice NP Textbooks for Reproductive/ Abortion Content

The reviews were conducted by Joyce Cappiello RN, FNP, Asst. Clinical Professor at the University of New Hampshire. Textbooks were reviewed for their inclusion if they met the criteria of: 1) authorship by family nurse practitioners, 2) marketed to family nurse  practitioner, and 3) publication date of 2000 or later. Only three textbooks met this criteria as NP authorship of textbooks is limited at this time. Family practice guideline texts were also selected using the same criteria. Texts were reviewed for their inclusion of the following: 1) general counseling guidelines for unintended pregnancy counseling, 2) initiating referrals for abortion care, 3) discussion of types of procedures, and 4) overall attention to reproductive choices.
