Providing leadership in promoting quality Nurse Practitioner education at the national and international levels

   

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) is the only organization specifically devoted to promoting quality nurse practitioner (NP) education at the national and international levels.  Starting in 1974 as a small group of educators meeting to develop the first NP curriculum guidelines, NONPF has evolved as the leading organization for NP faculty sharing the commitment of excellence in NP educations.  Today, the organization represents a global network of over 1200 educators.

NONPF has broad recognition for its leadership role in developing and maintaining NP educational resources.  First released in 1990 and subsequently updated in 1995, 2000, 2002, and 2006, the NONPF domains and core competencies for NP practice have provided guidance to curriculum development across NP programs.  NONPF has also led the development of entry-level competencies for NP specialty practice and of national guidelines for NP educational programs.  These seminal documents support the preparation of highly qualified health professionals.

NONPF provides valuable resources and enhances the promotion and tenure of NP faculty.

NEW ISSUE OF THE MENTOR

A new issue of The Mentor is now available.  Read the current issue to access the President's Column by Mary Anne Dumas and to learn about current activities within NONPF and NP education.

WEBCAST ON QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ARCHIVE

NONPF and the Institute for Nursing Centers (INC) jointly offered a Webcast on September 24, 1:00-2:30 PM Eastern, entitled "Quality Improvement for Advanced Practice Nurses."  Kathryn Fiandt, DNS, FAANP, of the University of Texas Medical Branch and Dr. Sheila Ryan, PhD, RN, FAAN, of the University of Nebraska, presemted the seminar to discuss the role of quality in ambulatory health care delivery systems, types of benchmarking and outcome data, the process of quality improvement, options for educating NP students regarding quality improvement, and how to distinguish quality improvement from research.  Obtain the Archive CD from the INC/Michigan Public Health Institute office using the attached order form.

 

NEW MODEL FOR FUTURE REGULATION OF APRNS FINALIZED

The "Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, & Education" paper is now final and under consideration for endorsement by national nursing organizations.  The NONPF Board of Directors endorsed the document in August 2008.  See the "Headlines" page for more details.

 

STATEMENTS ON DNP EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION
NONPF, in collaboration with 6 other nurse practitioner organizations, has participated in NP Roundtable activities to prepare statements pertaining to NP education & certification.  The document is available here.  The NP Roundtable is a coalition of NP organizations formed to collaborate, unify, and address issues of importance to NPs.

 

NONPF RECOGNITION AND GRANT AWARDS

In conjunction with the annual meeting, NONPF recognized members for their work in education, research, practice, and service to NONPF.  As well, NONPF instituted the awards to recognize preceptors and friends of NONPF. The APEA continued its support for the four $200 Outstanding Poster Awards, and Fitzgerald Health Education Associates provided the $1000 Small Grant Award to support a DNP scholarly project.  Nominations will open in November with a deadline of January 30, 2009.

 

REVISED CRITERIA FOR NP PROGRAMS
The National Task Force (NTF) for Quality NP Education had completed its periodic review and updating of the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs.  The review process is part of the NTF's commitment to ensure that the document retains its currency and also to provide the opportunity to refine the wording and include additional elaboration, as necessary, to enhance clarity. The third edition of this document is now available .

 

DNP NP CURRICULUM TEMPLATE EXEMPLARS & TELEWEB
NONPF is pleased to provide the document "Sample Curriculum Templates for Practice Doctorate NP Education" as a resource to NP educators who are developing NP curricula for practice doctorate education.  The document included exemplars for post-BSN and post-master's models.

 

NONPF offered Teleweb session entitled Doctoral Education for NPs:  Sample Curriculum Templates on October 31, 2007.  NONPF has developed exemplars of NP curriculum templates for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs to provide faculty with sample resources and to foster creative thinking in the curriculum transformation process for quality NP education. The session presented sample post-BSN and post-masters curriculum models and discussed strategies for curriculum development and integration of NP competencies.
