Welcome to AAP: Trina Jackson, Director of Field Initiatives PDF Print E-mail
AAP welcomed Trina Jackson as its Director of Field Initiatives this summer. Trina hails from the domestic violence movement, with 10 years of experience as an organizer, educator and facilitator.  In addition to adding her energy to AAP, she is an excellent and constant reminder of the lessons to be learned from other organizing efforts.  A common thread between the efforts to ensure abortion care and to stop domestic violence is the stigma that surrounds both of these public health issues.  “There’s definitely a lot of overlap of both the issues and the strategies to address them,” says Trina. “The way in which the domestic violence movement has been able to join with healthcare providers to address issues of family violence in their routine interactions with patients has done so much to break the silence and get women the care and information they need.  Imagine what a similar partnership around abortion care could do for women!”

Working group tackles Misoprostol alone usage PDF Print E-mail
The Misoprostol Alone Working Group is approaching its next meeting on October 11th.  Co-convened by AAP, Gynuity Health, Ibis Reproductive Health, and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the working group offers an opportunity to collectively take on the unknowns of misoprostol alone usage in the United States.

AAP Executive Director Melanie Zurek was joined by colleagues from co-convening organizations at the Association for Reproductive Health Professionals annual conference, to discuss self-induced abortion with misoprostol at the ARHP’s annual conference. The panel reflected on current responses to the practice in the United States, noted the mixed media response, as well as what is known internationally about misoprostol self-inductions.  With so much still unknown, presenting at ARHP offers an opportunity to engage clinicians and build awareness of this trend in the U.S. “Many healthcare providers may already see this practice in their patient care.  To give as much context as we can right now and highlight in what areas we still need more information is the best support currently available for providers who may come in contact with these cases.”
