Women's Guide to Making an Abortion Appointment
This is a resource to
help you make your abortion appointment.
It is just a guide. You might not
need answers to all of these questions.
You might also have more questions you want to ask. Ask all of your questions. If the person on the phone can't answer them,
ask to talk with somebody who can.
When
you call, you should have with you:
-
Pen and paper
- Your schedule
-
List of any questions you may wish to ask
-
Phone number
where you can be reached
-
Date that your last normal menstrual period started
- Insurance card or Medicaid information
Here are some basic
questions to ask:
- What methods of abortion do you offer (surgical abortion,
medication abortion)?
-
When can I get an appointment?
-
How much will it cost?
-
What is included in the cost? Could there be additional charges? (You should know what all the costs are going
to be.)
-
What types of payment do you accept?
-
Will you take Medicaid/my insurance?
-
Is there a follow-up exam? Is it included in the fee?
You
might also want to know:
-
Will I be given a pelvic exam or an ultrasound to
determine how far along I am in my pregnancy?
-
Will a clinician explain the procedure and make sure I
understand all the risks?
-
Will you perform a blood test for anemia (low iron in the
blood) and Rh factor (a common antibody)?
- Will there be someone to interpret for me if I need it? (Interpreter
services usually need to be arranged in advance. If you need them, do this when
you make your appointment.)

Be on the lookout for "pregnancy
counseling centers" - with names like Crisis Pregnancy
Center or A Woman's
Concern - that advertise free pregnancy testing, but are ambiguous about
other services, including abortion.
If you are unsure about a clinic or center, contact the National
Abortion Federation Hotline at 1-800-772-9100 for an abortion provider
referral.
