Key gaps in training: Illinois PDF Print E-mail

Family physicians in Illinois have the potential to fill a critical gap in access to reproductive health services. But do they have the interest and training? The Midwest Access Project (MAP) in partnership with AAP conducted a state-wide survey of Illinois family medicine residency programs to assess the current availability of training in contraceptive care, miscarriage management, options counseling, and early abortion care. Survey efforts, completed in 2007, also inquired about residents’ interest in providing these services. Although only a minority of family medicine residents reported that they plan to provide abortion services, overall the results suggest residents have greater interest in reproductive health training than they have opportunities to get trained. MAP and AAP hope to fill this gap by increasing training opportunities in the Midwest.  See a presentation of survey results here, a scientific poser recently presented at the annual meeting of the National Abortion Federation (NAF).
