Instances of women self-inducing abortion raise concerns about women’s access to safe abortion and other reproductive health services. Though not much is known about this practice domestically, there is increasing evidence that some low-income women are inducing abortion using the common medication misoprostol. In response to this emerging trend, AAP co-convenes the Misoprostol Alone Abortion Working Group as a forum for shared learning and discussion regarding a range of issues relating to the use of misoprostol for abortion along with Ibis Reproductive Health, Gynuity Health Projects and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. Together, the working group has developed a cooperative research and education initiative to promote and protect the health and rights of women. Working group participatory activities include research, information for women, educating health care providers, and investigating the legal implications for women, doctors and advocates.
