Abortion services overall have declined precipitously in this country over the last 20 years. The sharp decrease in hospital-based services is an important factor in absence of available services.  1,405 abortions performed in hospitals in 1982 dropped to 703 in 1996 and between 1992 and 1996 alone, this number decreased 18%.  The Hospital Access Collaborative was born of a grassroots organizing campaign aimed at increasing access to abortion services by expanding both the number of providers being trained to provide abortions and the number of hospitals offering abortion services.  The group continues serves as a forum to connect state-based reproductive health and rights advocacy groups with national advocates.
